At a glance
- The Lisbon process identifies Branca Rodrigues as wife of Marcos Rodrigues, associated with Lamego, and in custody.
- She is a candidate for Justa's mother, but that cross-record identification is not proved.
- A daughter mentioned in testimony must not be assigned to Branca without resolving whose daughter the text means.
A promising combination
Branca Rodrigues's Lisbon process identifies her as the wife of Marcos Rodrigues, a New Christian associated with Lamego, and in custody. Those particulars are supported by contemporary passages as well as the official catalogue. They make the record relevant to research into Justa Rodrigues, whose Coimbra catalogue names parents Marcos Rodrigues and Branca Rodrigues. [1] [2]
The Spanish marriage settlement for Justa Rodríguez separately names deceased parents Marcos Rodríguez and Blanca Rodríguez, with their residence provisionally read as Lamego. The resemblance is worth investigating. It does not automatically prove that the Branca in Lisbon process 4760 is the mother of the Justa in either of the other records. Chronology, exact family statements, and cross-references still need to be tested. [3]
What the original supplies
The prosecution identification on object m0003 names Branca and her husband and associates her with Lamego. The defence-inquiry heading on m0065 repeats the core identification. The words establish the person and her procedural position within this file. They do not provide a birthplace or an exact birth date. New Christian is the classification used by the source, not an independently reconstructed account of her beliefs. [1] [4]
A defence article on m0022 proposes to prove a quarrel involving a legitimate son of Branca. His name remains unresolved. It also describes a different boy, a son of Jorge Rodrigues, as a nephew of Branca's husband through his sister. The two boys must remain distinct. These relationship statements occur in a proposed-proof argument challenging testimony, so they are reported as allegations rather than entered into a pedigree as independently established facts. [5]
Whose daughter
One witness deposition has been located from its opening on m0065 to its closing signatures on m0066, manuscript folio 33r–v. The next witness begins below the signatures and falls outside that unit. Only defensible portions have been deciphered; locating the whole boundary is not the same achievement as translating the whole testimony. [4]
The witness is described as a shoemaker of Lamego, but the abbreviated personal name is not securely expanded. In the continuation, a phrase about a wife and daughter appears near hearsay wording. The likely relationship is to the witness, yet the antecedents remain insufficiently settled. It cannot be used as proof of a named daughter of Branca. A daughter-word is not enough: the sentence must tell us whose daughter it is.
No explicit identification of Justa as Branca's daughter was verified in these readable passages. That statement describes the limits of the inspected text. It must not be enlarged into a claim that Justa is absent from the entire process.
Dates and next tests
The inspected deposition securely supplies the month July, but not a publishable day and year. Modern creation and modification timestamps on an archive catalogue describe the catalogue record, not Branca's life. They cannot fill the missing historical date. The case's historical range and final outcome remain unestablished in this bounded investigation. [1] [4]
The next useful evidence would explicitly connect the relevant child to these parents, establish a chronology compatible across the records, or supply an unambiguous cross-reference. Until then, Branca's dossier is a substantive source about a named woman and a promising identity lead. It is not a completed link between families.
